| VURRN Small Towns Study |
|
Author: Steven McEachern Date Created: 04 Mar 2004 The VURRN group have just submitted an application to the Australian Research Council to fund a major study of small towns in regional Victoria. The emerging concept of ‘new regionalism’ places increasing emphasis on local, place-based initiatives for renewal and change in small towns in rural Australia. The current top-down central government approach has mixed results across the nation and research into more effective bottom-up approaches is required for effective rural regional development. Contributing to the new regionalism debate we will identify the role local institutional and relational factors play in the viability and sustainability of small towns. The outcomes from the research will include an identification of the complementary roles of local communities and centralised government in addressing the future of small towns.
